I had no idea cotton was a racist fiber. If picking cotton is racist, then wouldn’t wearing cotton be racist too?

@Ugnaught before trying to be a smart-ass about it, think about it a little.

Although the term isn’t immediately racist, it can be considered racist by a lot of people. Especially since the term, “cotton picker” in some areas is common slang for a racist slur. Since the term was used so often during slavery times to refer to slaves it carried on in some places as a racist slur for African-Americans and is still sometimes used, so I’d say yeah, it is racist, and a horrible name for a team, especially for a team that (from the looks of the picture) is predominantly African-American

That could be Obama’s son out there. Of course being a recent immigrant from Kenya there’s no history of cotton picking.

Well if it was the Spear Chuckers or the Porch Monkeys then it would be racist – cotton pickers don’t necessarily have to refer to only blacks, other nationalities have picked cotton too. Remember – before you get all bent out of shape over stuff that happened hundreds of years ago – just remember that it was their own people who sold them into slavery.

I picked cotton when I was a kid and I’m white. Don’t remember EVER picking cotton with a negro. They were are home getting welfare and making babies.

That’s my old high school. They grow lots and lots of cotton in that part of south Texas.
